Benefits of Organic Pet Foods
August 24, 2010
When it comes to foods, you should know that your pets also deserve the best. Your pets are, after all, there for you when you are lonely and in need of a company. It does not matter if your pet is a dog, or a cat, or even a snake, but what matters is they keep you company and bring cheer to your heart. For this reason, you should always have their safety and health in your mind when you are preparing their pet food.
Just like their human counterparts, pets also need healthy foods, so forget about those canned pet foods or the pet food pellets as it contain preservatives and other chemicals that are harmful to your pets. But think about organic pet foods and the many benefits that it can give your pets.
The most obvious advantage of giving your pets organic pet foods is that it can reduce the incidence of skin allergies as well as other skin diseases. Organic pet foods do not contain any harmful chemicals, so there is a decreased risk of allergens setting off an allergic reaction, which can cause your pets extreme discomfort. Furthermore, organic pet foods contain vitamins and natural minerals as well as beneficial nutrients that can greatly help their skin.
Another advantage of giving them organic pet foods is that you help reduce the risk of your pets developing diabetes. It may seem cute to have a chubby puppy or kitten, but when you really think about it, those cholesterol buildups in your pets can lead to detrimental diseases like obesity and heart problems. In the long run, the disease can make them weak as well as cause them other problems like organ failures. Now, if you are giving your pets organic pet foods, then you greatly reduce their risk of developing health problems. Aside from this, you are also helping them develop healthier bodies that can fight off infections and simple ailments much better.
If you give your pets organic pet foods, you will notice that there will be reduced digestive problems. This is because they are no longer ingesting the harmful chemicals in canned and processed pet foods but are only taking in nutritious and natural foods. Furthermore, organic pet foods are also easily digestible by their stomachs, so this greatly helps in their bowel elimination.
Lastly, organic pet foods will boost the immune system of your pets. Our pets do get sick sometimes, and if your pet has a very weak immune system, a simple cold could do them a lot of damage. Now, with organic pet foods, you give them better chances of fighting off simple and minor infections and aid them greatly in the recovery process.
I once ate only organic food for about 2 months. I bought it online from an organic farm in California.?
August 19, 2010
The food tasted great and I lost about 30 pounds in 2 months. My energy level skyrocketed and I felt great. You gotta realize that I ate as much as I wanted to eat morning, night, and noon. Also, I drank only organic drinks and also bottled water. I had to stop buying the organic food becuase it was too expensive and I could no longer afford it. As time passed I gained all of the weight back that I had lost. Never in my 47 years have I lost so much weight so fast while eating all that I wanted to eat with little exercise (I walked about 30 minutes a day). Why do you suppose that the organic food diet helped me to lose so much weight. Isn’t food food, no matter if it is organic or not. PLease let me hear from some of you health freaks out there. Thanks a lot. PS – I sure wish I could afford to stay on an organic food diet – I bet I would lose 50 pounds if I could.!!
Unfortunately food is not food. The “regular” grown food is grown in soil that is not rich in nutrients. Thats why a regular carrots has no taste or worse a fowl taste. But an organic carrot is sweet and very tasty, the way it should be. They also don’t use pesticides, herbacides, or waxes, dyes, and sprays on organic foods. Organic is the only way to go……BUT you are totally right about the cost. I would love to only feed my body and the bodies of my children with pure, healthy organic food, but I can’t afford it. I buy the organic foods I can afford, carrots, celery, bananas.
Basically organic foods are so high in nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that they help your body to work at it’s best. Think of it like your car, if you put regular gas in it the car runs bad, lots of stinky exhaust, tics and pings etc. But when you put in premium gas your car runs smooth. Same with us, the foods we eat are our fuel, if we eat cheap, over processed foods we don’t run as well as if we gave ourselves high end premium.
Hope I helped, good luck
I’m looking for a website with meatless recipes for picky eaters.?
August 9, 2010
Our family has 8 people – many are children. I am trying to ’slowly’ convert them over to more meatless recipes and organic foods, but my smallest ones are SOOO picky. I need more kid-approved recipes and all of the ones I’ve seen online contain tons of beans, zucchini, eggplant and the such – my 6 year old and 3 year old won’t have a thing to do with those! HELP!
Dear lord, feeding childen vegetables? You are a cruel and heartless woman…. haha. Careful, they might just declare feeding kids vegetables as illegal as spanking them. What child in its own mind would happily embrace EGGPLANT? LOL LOL
Let me tell you a silly little secret. When my daughter was 2 she decided ALL she would eat was pjb. Nothing else would pass her lips. Rather than argue over such silliness, I just gave her the best pb and top quality whole grain bread. Along with her milk that was enough. This lasted six months! Eventually she decided avocado was more fun to play with and we were off to a more balanced diet.
I just did not want to begin the pattern of arguing and chose my battles wisely. Surely your kids love fruit? Do they like nuts and healthy snack foods like raisins etc? Have they discovered “ants on a log” yet? (celery stuffed with cream cheese or peanut butter with raisins along the top). Healthy pancakes is another. Sometimes it is just presentation too. I found a pancake with a face made of fruit seemed to be received with more enthusiasm.
Here are a few sites with pictures of the final foods that are very healthy vegetarian. I betcha you will find a few winners. I have been meatless for 30 years now.. omg am I that old?… and am in excellent health.
Most of the sites I have here also have sections for childrens’s foods as well. Not a bean or a zucchini to be seen! LOL I hope these sites have good ideas for you to check out.
Best of luck. Methinks feeding a group that size you need it!
Organic farming question?
August 9, 2010
Since they don’t use pesticides (supposedly), how do they get rid of the bugs? Do they smash them, catch & release, put them in jars, eat them, or do they cheat? I’m guessing they sneak out at night when no one’s looking and use chemicals. You ever wonder how many Mexicans it would take to pick bugs off of every plant, every day of the growing season on a large farm?
Just curious, I tried to grow organic, but whenever I picked the little gremlins off they would just go right back! I tried taking them over to my neighbor’s garden but that caused friction. I don’t want to hurt the bugs because I think I can be arrested for cruelty by the OFGC (Organic Food Growers Commission) and the EPA.
Interesting and informative answers all, thank you! I see organic farming isn’t for me, too much work involved. Since pesticides haven’t been shown to harm consumers, I’ll stick to that.
there are many things organic farms to do control insect pests. Many use plant/biologically based insecticides such as Bt, neem, spinosad, etc. Crop rotation, creating lively healthy soil (this can take up to 15 years to do) by applying compost, green manures, rock powders, etc., also are effective. plants grown in great soil are healthy and healthy plants do not attract pests and diseases. Sickly plants do.
Trap cropping-plant a crop intended to attract pest insects about 2 weeks earlier than the main crop. the trap crop is destroyed along with the pests. this can be very effective at long term control but requires keen observation and timely eradication or you can make the problem much, much worse.
Exclusion using row covers is very effective.
Attracting in beneficial insects is very effective but you cannot use any insecticides as most organic ‘cides are broad spectrum and this will take a new grower about 3 to 5 years to achieve a good healthy population of beneficial critters.
Hand picking can be very effective but is not really useful for the big industrial organic farms. On my small farm this is used a lot.
Rotating livestock and crop lands together. Graze livestock on fallowed land and they will often break plant pest cycles
With organic there is no magic bullet but rather a complicated set of strategies used to control (but not eliminate) pests and diseases. it takes many years to become proficient at this kind of growing.
What Detox And Cabbage Diet Is All About
August 7, 2010
One of the new diet programs that are being introduced in the market right now is the detox diet. The name ‘detox’ is a shortened form of the word ‘detoxification’, which lies at the heart of the program.
The diet makes use of the body’s natural system of neutralizing and eliminating the various toxins that the body takes in. As an internal protective system, the body converts any material that may seem harmful to the body into a chemical form that is less dangerous.
Toxins can take several forms depending on what is taken into the body. Examples of harmful toxins are external chemicals like pesticides and household cleaners that are accidentally ingested; food additives, drugs and other food materials that may affect the body in a bad way; and of course cigarettes. Some toxins come from the body such as ammonia, a chemical produced when proteins are broken down during digestion. Because of the ingrained system, all these toxins no longer stay in the body and are excreted and flushed out in the form of stools or urine.
Basically, the term detox diet is used in the treatment of people who have become dependent on drugs and alcohol; but now with the birth of various kinds of diets, the term is used to any diet that helps in detoxifying the body.
The diet itself focuses on taking in foods that provide vitamins, nutrients and other chemicals such as anti-oxidants that help the body purify itself. There is also much emphasis on lessening or reducing the chemicals that are being taken inside the body. This is why many people under detox diet prefer to eat organic food.
Another technique with the detox diet is the emphasis on high fibers and water to help the body get rid of the toxins. People undergoing detox diet will experience headache during the first few days. Some may also suffer from excessive diarrhea so it is important to watch out for dehydration. There is also a risk if constipation if not enough water is taken in.
Detox diet however is not for people who have anemia, diabetes and heart disease. It is also not recommended for women who are pregnant or those people who are suffering from kidney problems, liver disease, underweight issues and ulcer. People with low blood pressure, low immunity, hypothyroidism and epilepsy are also discouraged to go under a detox diet.
From the name itself, the cabbage soup diet is a program that involves the cabbage soup as the central figure. It may seem absurd at first and quite different from other diet programs such as the Atkins diet and the South Beach diet but it actually has a rationale.
The cabbage soup diet is based on the assumption that diets that contain high fiber but low in fat can help the body lose weight. The cabbage soup is usually made of cabbage, onions and tomatoes. The soup is supposed to fat-burning as it has a high fiber content. In fact, the more soup that you take in each day, the more calories you will burn and the more pounds you will lose. The taste will be bland so it has to be taken in with other foods.
Unlike other diet programs, there are no restrictions in the food that you take in as long as you drink the cabbage soup with every meal. From low calorie vegetables to potatoes and beef, you can eat anything you want. Of course, dieters under the program are encouraged to take in fruits and vegetables as well as unsweetened fruit juices.
One guideline, however, that must be strictly met is the fact that all meals should be broiled, baked or boiled. No fried meals for the duration of the diet. Another guideline is to avoid alcohol, bread and other carbonated drinks that hastens weight gain.
One downside to the cabbage soup diet is the fact that it not for the long term. It can only be done for a period of seven days. By the end of the week, the person can lose as much as 15 pounds depending of course on the meal that he or she has eaten during the program and how much you have adhered to the guidelines. Beyond the prescribed week, continuing the program can be dangerous to one’s health as too much weight will already be lost.
Because of this, dieters often use the cabbage soup diet if they need to lose weight fast. In fact, most people use the program to get into shape before they enroll in a long term diet program. Some get into the cabbage soup diet program when they need to lose extra pounds for a special occasion.
